Why Crossovers?

Why Crossovers?

Crossovers still have a large market.

Crossovers still have a large market.

In this day and age, and given the current economic landscape, the market trend seems to be in favor of small cars that put a premium on fuel economy and environment-friendliness. So where does that put our beloved crossovers?

CUVs may not be the ideal green, fuel-efficient car, but it does strike a balance between the advantages of car platforms and SUV-scale frames. I mean, there are a lot of people who weren’t too keen on the Toyota Prius, for example (Search YouTube for Jeff Dunham’s skits where he poked fun on his Prius). Sometimes, dudes just gotta have their vehicles a certain way.

Here’s a rundown of why we here at Crossomotive think that CUVs will still have a significant market even in these dire times:

1. Performance - A crossover combines a car platform with SUV framing and styling. The car platform provides better handling than lumbering SUV platforms. Plus, there’s no doubt they consume less fuel than their full-fledged counterparts.

2. Relative Affordability - Can’t buy a full-blown SUV? Tired of excessive spending on models like the Escalade? Then you can’t go wrong with a crossover. Each

3. Versatility - CUVs provide a very stable and versatile platform, especially for new technology, as seen in the emotionally-expressive Škoda Yeti’s and the Nissan Qazana concept. Most CUVs also have limited off-road capability, so the owner can use it both on and off the road without having to worry about the terrain.

4. Bigger Ride, Better Ride Height - There are times when a boxy little electric car just isn’t the one for a potential car buyer. Sometimes one’s ride just has to be bigger. Without sacrificing sedan-like performance, crossovers provide increased ride height and a bigger, more aggressive stance to satisfy the need for a big machine.

Those are just some of the reasons why Crossovers still remain a popular choice for many car buyers. Hopefully, they remain excellent options for more years to come.

Bigger, Better Crossomotive for 2009

Many experts believe that the global financial crisis will continue in 2009, and that the automotive industry won’t be able to recover until 2010. There are many developments that point to these expectations, including massive cutbacks on manpower and production, car show commitment cancellations by big-name automakers, and the dropping of several car models.

But the people here at Crossomotive will remain optimistic.

We hope to see more interesting crossover concepts debuting at 2009’s initial car show offerings, first and foremost among which is the currently-ongoing North American International Auto Show in Detroit. We expect greener crossovers that cater to the flagging market’s demands of environment-friendly and cost-efficient vehicles. We’re sure that automakers recognize the direction they have to make to survive this troubling time, and we trust that they will make the necessary adjustments to usher in a new era of automotive excellence and innovation.

ETA: After the Obama inauguration, it is clear that the new President of the United States of America will try to transform the nation to better adapt to a changing economic landscape. This, of course, involves the many industries of America, not the least of which is the automotive industry. With Detroit’s bailout plan set in motion, we can only hope that automakers step up and make the most of this second chance.
